Project Name: Sculpting Light
Client: After J International
Location: Seoul, Korea
Size: 120 sq-m
Status: Complete (2019)
Architect: Suk Lee, Dawon Lee
Project Description:
Commercial spaces in domestic residential and commercial complexes have a disadvantage in that it is difficult to draw natural light into the interior due to their low floor height and deep planar structure. Sculpting Light creates a bright open space through lighting-centered interior renovation in such a dark closed space. The ceiling and wall surfaces are partially incised to form a sculpted space as if lifting a piece of white fabric, and the light embedded in the gap is designed to leak out, transforming a rather heavy and dark space into a brighter and lighter space. In addition, by considering the physical properties of Mirrorsol, Barrisol, glass partitions and other various interior finish materials, various lights were realized, and the direction and sense of space were maximized through reflection effects to create a narrow space in a more expanded form. The conference room closet in this space, where cosmetics business is currently held, is a closet with various functions that satisfies its role as both a product storage space and a display space under the concept of ‘door in door’. It is designed to be used as a storage space by opening and closing the white oak wooden door divided by the pattern, and to slide the black mirror door even in the closed state to display the partially displayed products behind the long black mirror as needed.
